Emergency workers were racing to evacuate thousands of people from severe floods Tuesday after Typhoon Yagi swept through northern Vietnam, killing 63 people and leaving 40 others missing.

About 752 people have also been injured in flooding and landslides, officials at the ministry of agriculture said Tuesday.

Meteorologists have reported that Typhoon Yagi, the most intense storm to strike northern Vietnam in 30 years, caused significant damage after it made landfall on Saturday. The typhoon, with winds exceeding 149 kilometers (92 miles) per hour, brought down bridges, ripped roofs off buildings, and damaged factories.

The north of the country is now battling serious flooding, with several communities partially underwater.

In Hanoi, areas along the Red River were partially flooded, prompting residents to evacuate their homes.

Phan Thi Tuyet, 50, a resident near the river, stated that she had never encountered water levels this high before.

“I’ve lost everything; it’s all gone. We had to move to higher ground to stay safe. We couldn’t bring any of our furniture with us. Everything is now submerged.”
