During a Senate finance panel hearing on DepEd's 2025 budget proposal, Education Secretary Sonny Angara compared the preparations for the 2025 PISA to a "bar exam." He explained, “We plan to equip teachers and students with the necessary resources, making it akin to preparing for a bar exam.”
Angara previously stated that he aims to have student exams similar to PISA in order to align with the program's assessment standards.
Angara further noted that “science education is highly focused and specifically geared toward that kind of exam.”
The PISA 2022 results showed that Filipino students were five to six years behind their peers from other countries in mathematics, science, and reading. Additionally, the Philippines scored a mean of 14 in creative thinking, placing second to last out of 64 countries.
At the forum, the agency and its partners also explored potential enhancements to the senior high school work immersion program. On August 8, DepEd and the Private Sector Advisory Council formalized an agreement with the Private Sector Jobs and Skills Corporation to develop an improved work immersion program for senior high school students.
The Presidential Communications Office stated that this initiative aims to “enhance the employability of senior high school students.”
