The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a warning that the heat index in three areas across the country is expected to reach "danger" levels on Thursday, March 13.
The heat index, often referred to as the "feels-like" temperature, represents the actual sensation of heat experienced by the human body when relative humidity is considered. High humidity can make temperatures feel significantly warmer than the actual air temperature, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
According to PAGASA’s forecast released on Wednesday evening, the heat index is anticipated to rise to extreme levels in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, reaching 45°C, while Virac, Catanduanes, and Cotabato City, Maguindanao, are projected to experience a heat index of 42°C. Such high heat index values fall within the "danger" category, meaning prolonged exposure to these conditions could pose serious health risks, particularly to vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, children, and those with preexisting health conditions.
Authorities advise residents in affected areas to take precautionary measures, including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and seeking shade or air-conditioned environments whenever possible. PAGASA continues to monitor weather conditions and urges the public to remain vigilant against the potential impacts of extreme heat.
At temperatures within the danger range of 42 to 51°C, individuals are at high risk of heat-related illnesses. Heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, while prolonged exposure may lead to heat stroke, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Extreme Caution Level Across 63 Areas
In addition to the areas under the danger category, PAGASA forecasts that 63 monitoring stations nationwide will experience a heat index within the extreme caution range, which falls between 33°C and 41°C. At this level, people may experience heat-related discomfort, and those exposed to the sun for extended periods could suffer from heat exhaustion or heat cramps.
Among the locations expected to experience intense heat are:
- 40°C: Puerto Princesa City (Palawan), Ambulong (Tanauan, Batangas), San Jose (Occidental Mindoro), Legazpi City (Albay), Central Bicol State University of Agriculture-Pili (Camarines Sur), Dumangas (Iloilo), Catarman (Northern Samar), and Zamboanga City (Zamboanga del Sur).

Caution Level in Select Areas
Meanwhile, some locations will experience a caution level heat index, ranging from 27 to 32°C. These include:
- 31°C: Tanay, Rizal
- 30°C: Itbayat and Basco, Batanes
In contrast, Baguio City and La Trinidad, Benguet, will have a relatively cooler and non-hazardous heat index of 26°C, making them among the least affected by the extreme heat conditions.
Public Advisory
PAGASA advises residents in affected areas to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, avoiding direct sun exposure, and seeking shade or air-conditioned spaces when possible. Authorities also encourage the public to watch out for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly among children, the elderly, and those with existing health conditions.
